My mom has been bring this issue up a lot ... I don't know the exact hadeeth but when it comes to alcohol there is a hadeeth that means its haraam to be the alcohol carrier, server, sitting by a drinker, etc ... if anybody has the hadeeht please do post it ...
Anyways I was just wondering if anybody had any thoughts on it, I eat at those resaurants (pretty much all the restaurants here) and don't usually think much of it ... but I was wondering if anybody had other thoughts?

I don't have any scholarly knowledge to make my opinion any valid....but I like to make this analogy:
We fill up gas from stations that sell alcohol.
I know that it's not the same environment as alcohol being served...but I guess the comparison can be made? Maybe?

I do make that comparison too, we buy our food from stores that sell alcohol but it is different than actually sitting in a restaurant like Apple Bee's and Chilis that have a bar you know ...

there is no easy Alternative to Gas Stations. But there are alternatives to restarants...i think thats a point to consider.

Well I think it may be in the sense that eating is something considered at a different level than just buying for the necessities of life (gas, food at the store).. for example it is one of the things we give up when we fast, we are encouraged to sit together with our families and praise Allah before we begin (as we should do before starting anything else).. but it is one of the pleasure I suppose that Allah has granted us in this world (although the majority of the world doesn't get to eat enough to even sustain a relatively healthy life.. but I'm getting of point).. so perhaps to do something that is a blessing upon us in a place that is marked with sin is haram I suppose. I personally would abstain from it.. as it is always better to avoid what you do not know for sure.
On a different note dazzooozzzoooo, I too have heard of that hadith, so I'm not surprised at it being mentioned.. but I am no scholar so I have no knowledge on what is true. It would be nice, though if someone could post up something useful on this matter...

This is why I loved living in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia... it had all of these restaurants but you never had to worry about the alcohol or pork! What's sad though is that its not like that in most Muslim countries, many have started to sell alcohol as though it was a normal product.

Yeah, I know. When I lived in Abu Dhabi/Al Ain.. we could go out anywhere and eat without worrying about anything. Although, I do remember once when we went to this posh hotel for a party thrown by my dad's work buddies.. all the Paki families (the dads all worked with my dad) were there. One of the kids (my classmate and neighbour), who was my age, was hanging out with us, and he added sprite with pepsi, and pretended like he was drinking champagne.. and I looked over, and saw that his dad was drinking out of a wine glass...
Two things stayed with me.. first of alll. that's what I always remember when someone mixes sprite and pepsi togther (my bro cuz he mixes up weird things and eats them: ex. pepsi & pizza...yeah).. and secondly, I came to realize when I grew up that yes, even Muslims do bad things... that took a lot of understanding on my part... and I still don't get it sometimes.
Maryam's dad visited my homeplace (or close to it: Dubai) while on a trip, and he told us how you roam the place, and you can't even tell that it's a Muslim country anymore.. as vice is so visible and wide spread... Same think with my mother land: Pakistan.. I've heard some really really bad things.. things are getting worse everywhere..

Yeah I can imagine, after going to Jordon in the summer, I can honestly say that I would never want to live there ever. I feel sorry for my sis she's over there right now and doesn't like it to much.

How bout we go back to the topic... After reading the thread -if you haven't thought about it before- would you feel any guilt eating in a restaurant that serves alcohol, why or why not?

I wouldn't feel as guilty eating at a restaurant that served alcohol, than at a restaurant that actually has a bar in it like applebees. This really makes you think of where you need to draw the line. They serve alcohol on airplanes, are you going to ban yourself from flying out anywhere because of the chance the person next to you may request a drink.

Ya that's true same way my mom thinks, she's doesn't mind going to somewhere like Old Country Buffet even though it sells alcohol but she has second thoughts about going to Apple Bee's... what restaurants don't have bars?
